Blunt reforming to support MKBCA

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Update: The Blunt gig in memory of Ryan's mother, Joy Porter was a great success and raised nearly £2300. Well done lads.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Cancer is something that's affected most members of Blunt. Both Richard's Brother and Paul's Sister suffered from forms of the disease but thankfully were treated successfully. But it has also taken the life of Paul's Father and, most recently, Ryan's Mother.

It's for this reason that they aim to raise money for the charity that looked after Ryan's Mother, The Mid-Kent Breast Cancer Research Appeal. To achieve this Blunt are reforming after 13 years away to play a one off gig at the Underground Bar at the LSE in Aldwych, London on the 14th October 2011.

For more information you can email BluntBand@hotmail.co.uk or visit their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/BluntBand. To Donate and/or purchase tickets for the event you can visit http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/BluntBand.

What people do for charity!! by Gerry West

Once a year I go on a short walking holiday with Steve and Gordon, two great friends. This year I suggested we walk to the top of Ben Nevis (we had already done Snowdon and Scafell Pike, when I was younger).

Steve and I flew to Glasgow, Gordon picked us up and on the 10 June, after a night in Fort William we started the ascent at 0930.

It is a hard walk - I took until 1315 to reach the top , we then started the descent!!! – Unfortunately, I had pulled a muscle so it took over 4 hours to come down. At the bottom is the ‘Ben Nevis Inn’, never has a pint of lager tasted so good. Next day, I could hardly move let alone walk, so some gentle sightseeing was in order, we flew back to Gatwick on the 12 June.

The upshot is - I told all friends, relatives, golfers and clay pigeon shooters that I know, that this was a charity walk for the Mid-Kent Breast Cancer Research Appeal (The charity supported by my wife, Marion, during her year as Lady’s Captain at Pout Wood Golf Club). Ultimately, due to the incredible generosity of all involved, a total sum of £1,183.50 is available to the charity. Bearing in mind, when I set out on this venture I thought I may raise a few hundred quid – I have been staggered by my friends’ generosity. People are great aren’t they!

PS Three weeks after the climb up ‘The Ben’ I was able to walk without pain, now I am back to normal. To cap it all I have just received my state pension.

Chainhurst Garden Safari

Chainhurst Garden Safari, held on 26 June, and organised by Rosemary Turnbull, was a terrific success and attracted a lot of visitors to the gardens. All 18 gardens looked magnificent on the day and reflected all the effort the owners had put into making their gardens special.

A wonderful amount was raised for our charity and the great thing was that it brought the villagers together. They met and made friends and shared their interest in gardens.

A presentation was held in the organiser's garden and Sue & Peter Jones accepted the cheque for our charity. Everyone was delighted with this years event and are keen to do the same again next year.

If you were unable to attend this years Chainhurst Garden Safari, then please don't miss next years. This not to be miss event is planned for the 9 or 10 June 2012. Dates to be confirmed.

Maplesden Noakes School - "race for life" donation

In early June, Maplesden Noakes School organised a "race for life" event to raise funds for the MKBCA.

The idea for the event came after the head of sixth form asked each form in the school to organise an assembly. However, teacher Alexandra Panconi and her form decided to do more.

Alexandra is a friend of Jo Ostermeyer, who has been raising funds for our charity. So she thought this would be the perfect opportunity to do a "race for life" in school and collect some funds.

The students in her form put together an assembly to promote the event, and presented it to each year group in the school. The presentation ended with a short video of Jo explaining her story (which proved to be very powerful and reduced a few students - and staff - to tears)!

On the day, many sixth formers and staff wore pink, and as well as students from Alexandra's form, some of the other sixth form students completed the run. In addition, every form tutor collected money from their students - with staff also contributing towards the final amount.

The students really enjoyed staging this event, and the school is hoping to be able to repeat the experience next year.

Ros Harper's South Downs Way Challenge

Ros completed her challenge on June 29 – July 1 2011 in aid of breast cancer research. She did the long distance bike ride to celebrate her recent recovery from breast cancer.

It was a tough, hilly off road ride of 100 miles over 3 days; and she started training early!

It started near Winchester, taking in the beautiful Hampshire and Sussex countryside and finished in Eastbourne. There was 10,000ft of climbing involved – like cycling up Mt Snowdon 3 times!

Ros's son, Nick Harper, also completed a Kyakathon. Between them, they raised a substantial amount of money for our charity.

All we can say is well done and thank you Ros and Nick. A tremendous achievement.

Radiotherapy DVD

Dr Russell Burcombe from Oncology requested our charity fund a DVD that would inform patients who had to go through Radiotherapy. We hope the DVD helps to dispel some of the patient’s concern by showing them machines would be involved in the treatment and hearing the information given by the medical staff.

A copy of the DVD will be available on this website soon.
